9/20/1942Kanak Lata Barua, a yound child who tried to host the national flag at Goupur police station in Assam with the help of 500 people, was shot by the police station incharge.
11/19/1835Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. She was named Manikarnika and was called 'Manu'.
11/19/1838Keshab Chandra Sen (1838-84), nationalist leader of Bengal, was born in Calcutta. He was one of the first Indians to sow the seeds of secularism in the country. He joined the Brahmo Samaj in 1857 but seperated from it in 1866 and founded Brahma Samaj of India, a radical offshoot of the Adi Brahmo Samaj.
10/28/1964Padmabhushan Vaikunthbhai Mehta, famous Gandhian leader, passed away.
1/15/1949General K. N. Kariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief. He was the first Indian to reach to this post in Indian Army. In 1956, he was designated as Chief of the Army Staff - General, later Field Marshal. This event is commemoratively observed as Army Day.

3/22/1907Perturbed by a new law restricting Asiatic immigrants, Mohandas Gandhi, a young Indian attorney now living in South Africa, organized a campaign of civil disobedience to resist the statute popular bill passed by the new Boer government of the Transvaal Colony. The Asiatic Registration Bill was considered by Gandhi unjust and discriminatory to the large Chinese and Indian populations. However, the government expressed the belief that the ordinance was popular. ""Over 90 percent of the white people thoroughly approve of it,"" said Sir Gilbert Parker, a Conservative member of Parliament.
