Jayaprakash Narayan led a procession against economic conditions in Patna. There was lathi charged and he issued a call for total revolution. He also started the 'Citizens for Democracy' movement.

5/31/1977Major Premchand and Naik Nima Dorji Sherpa, in the team on Indian Army Treckers, reached the peak of Kanchenjunga. They were amongst the first Indians to reach this peak.
1/30/1948Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the spiritual leader of Indian independence, was shot and killed by a Hindu extremist. The 78-year-old Gandhi was shot at point-blank range as he was walking through a garden to a pergola, where he was to deliver his daily prayer meeting.
8/20/1993Mother Teresa hospitalized for malaria.
8/19/1946Cabinet Mission's plan announced an interim government, which was formed by reconstituting the Viceroy's Executive Council. The Muslim League took umbrage and started direct action. Riots broke out as Muslims attacked Hindu's in Calcutta and the rest of Bengal. The Viceroy persuaded the Muslim League to join the government. But the League declined to join the Constituent Assembly unless the demand for a seperate state of ""Pakistan"" was conceded.

9/15/1926Vande Mataram', a lengthy feature film produced by Vande Mataram Film Co, Bombay, was prohibited on September 15 by the Censor Board on the grounds that it was an underlying attack on the prestige of University Education in India. The film, however, was cleared on December 7 after deleting the objectionable scenes.
1/31/1941Second Lieutenant Premindra Singh Bhagat of the Bombay Sappers showed an act of unparalleled bravery and inspiring leadership when commanding a detachment of 21 Field company of the Bombay Sappers on the road to Gondar, in Abyssinia. Hence, The Victoria Cross (VC) was bestowed upon him and he became the first Indian Commissioned Officer receipeant of The Victoria Cross (VC).
