11/29/1988Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, resigned as Prime Minister of India, a country which had been ruled by his family for all but five of its 42 years of independence. The end of the dynasty came after elections that were both violent and inconclusive, neither Gandhi's Congress party nor the opposition National Front received a clear majority, although the latter had a few more votes. The only real winner was the fundamentalist Hindu party, Bharatiya Janata, which is now the power broker. If the National Front wants to rule, its leader V.P. Singh needs the religious group's support.
9/18/1924Mahatma Gandhi was to fast for 21 days in despair of the recent riots between Muslims and Hindus. It was an expression of his 'unbearable hopelessnes'. ""Nothing I say or write,"" he said, ""can bring the two communities together."" Even as he spoke there were reports of further riots at Kohat, in which 20 Hindus and 11 Muslims were killed. Reservations, Gandhi speaking in Allahabad said, reserved the right to drink water with or without salt. ""It is both a penance and a prayer. As it is penance I need not have taken the public into my confidence but I publish it as, let me hope, an effective prayer to Hindus and Muslims, not to commit suicide"".

7/21/1947Indian Constitution Assembly accepted the tricolour flag as its National Flag. This flag is with three equal horizontal stripes of Saffron (Sacrifice), White (Truth) and Green (Prosperity) and a Chakra is superimposed on white (Dharma Chakra on the capitol of Ashoka's Pillar at Sarnath) in blue colour having 24 spokes. The ratio of the width to length is two to three.
