The Olympic Games hosted by Amsterdam fully realized Pierre de Coubertin's vision: 'the nations of the world in friendly competition'. After a succession of Olympics dominated by North America and Western Europe, Amsterdam welcomed more than 3,000 competitors.

1/26/1950 | The new Indian awards known as Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra and Vir Chakra, were finally selected in June 1948 and annouced on the first Republic Day. Param Vir Chakra to the Victoria Cross, the Maha Vir Chakra to the Indian Order of Merit and the Vir Chakra is equivalent to the Military Cross. The Ashoka Chakra series, meant for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy, was probably meant to replace the George Cross, Albert Medal and George Medal. |
10/9/2000 | The Reserve Bank of India issued bank notes in the denomination of Rs.1000 in the Mahatma Gandhi series bearing the leader's portrait in the watermark and signature of Dr. Bimal Jalan, Governor of the RBI. The length of the note is 177 mm and the width is 73 mm. The notes are printed in a combination of offset and intaglio processes. This is the first note with intaglio printing on it. |
