9/3/1979M. M. Bhatnagar was appointed as the Narcotics Commissioner of India. He headed this office till 14-06-1985.
8/15/1947The Defence department becomes the Ministry of Defence under a Cabinet Minister. Each service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. Under the Constitution, the supreme command of the Armed Forces was vested with the President.
8/15/1947Sultan Mehmud of Ghazni began his first real expedition to India by defeating the Hindu King Jaipal. He won Afghanisthan and Punjab in Peshawar battle. This was the first major Muslim conquest in India.
10/15/1990Bharat Ratna, India's highest award, was given to Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (b-1918), the South African black nationalist leader who arrived in India on a five-day visit. He is the first non-Asian to get this honour.
